Having your URL written in relevant websites/blogs comment sections or in forums as user signatures can be an effective way to drive some traffic into your website. That is actually true and I suggest you to do it where possible. What I want to write about in this post is a thin line and if you are not interested in ethics in SEO, you won’t be enjoying to read this post. You ‘ve been warned.

Couple of years ago while working in a project, I was checking and moderating when necessary a website’s comments section which was only one of my responsibilities. It was a pretty high trafficed website and there were dozens of comments coming in daily, not bot based but user comments. That was the first time when I felt so sick about people leaving URL addresses with their so-called comments (I will explain the “so-called” part) just for SEO purposes. I was so stucked moderating comments in that project and I realized I was turned into a master of comment filterer, eventually. I was like “Yea yea, just another comment to drop an URL on the page” just after reading the beginning words of the comment.

Don’t want to go down there too deeply, where I am getting at is; This is a way of trying to fool a person for your needs. Sounds low, doesn’t it? Writing cliche sentences with some quotes from the original post or trying to seem thankful with affectational words is nothing but a disrespect.

In this website I am trying to add information and ways for people who are trying to built a worthy content for their websites, but the main aim here is to do it in a good and ethical way. As for the URL using in your comments and forum signatures/posts; do it in a good way and really mean it while doing. Try to add a value to the topic you are participating. Right, it requires more effort than just dropping a standard comment.

Bottom line is; If you leave a comment under a post with useful information or sincerity in it; that URL you use with your comment will be more attractive to the readers.

Think about it.

As seen, I added SEO as the business category, website name, and a location information. Emphasis here; This title tag option goes to the ones who give priority to list in local SERPS. Since the searchers add specific details such as state and business category when doing a local based search, listing those fields in your title tags will add your website a higher value from that point of view.

Well, since visitors are the heart beats of the websites, you need to keep that website alive by driving traffic to it. There are several ways to achieve that. Having a worthy content is a must here though, no matter what you do to bring visitors to your website; if you don’t have anything for them those visits will remain just statistics in your analytics pages, they won’t be coming back anytime soon.

Commenting on blogs are a really effective way to bring visitors to your website. Your comment should include your website url with an active link.

Do Really Participate

By commenting, I mean really commenting. Don’t just find a post and leave a comment like “Wow! That’s cool.” and leave your website url with it. That’s uncool and also considered as a spam. You need to participate in the topic and your comment has to add a value to that post. If it does, then the rest of the participators will more than happy to click and visit your website.

Comment on Relevant Blogs

It is better for you to find and comment on relevant blogs to your website’s content. In a related area the readers of that blog are also a potential visitors to your website. With the help of your comment’s being valuable; the readers of that post will find a reason to have a look to your website, probably. That’s what an interested reader would do.

Points

Don’t comment to just leave a comment. Add a value to the post you are commenting.
Never leave a word or two length comment and leave your website url with it. That’s spam.
Comment on relevant blogs.

You probably read usages of “nofollow” and “dofollow” html attributes in link building related websites or articles. We will focus on “nofollow”, may be we can later have a look at “dofollow” aswell. So, what is nofollow ?

Search engine spiders get links from pages and add them to their crawl list to follow. The first and main aim in using nofollow attribute is to prevent spam by instructing the search engine spiders when the attribute is assigned to a link. When it is assigned to a specific hyperlink, the search engine takes it as a link not to follow therefore the given link is treated like a simple text and not taken to the crawl list.

The usage of the attribute for specific links is ;

<a href=”test.html” rel=”nofollow”>test</a>

There is also a way to make this attribute to cover the whole page. By using it as a page-level meta tag, you are saying to search engines that no links in that particular page should be followed. The usage of page-level nofollow attribute is;

<meta name=”robots” content=”nofollow” />

In Which Cases You Should Use NoFollow ?

Well, as mentioned it is mainly used to prevent spam. You may use a page-level meta tag nofollow in your comment section. This will keep your link juice inside aswell. (We will have a look at link juice subject in an article, later).

Potential untrusted content is another good reason to use nofollow attribute. If you somehow had to reference or link to a page that you are not sure about its trust and authority, it is a good idea to give a hyperlink with a nofollow attribute.

Points

nofollow is an HTML attribute.
There are two ways of usage; a page-level meta tag which covers all the links in a page and a single hyperlink assignment which covers only the assigned hyperlink.
You may want to use nofollow attribute in your comments or guestbook sections as a page-level meta tag and on some specific links which you are not sure about their trust and authority.

Article writing as mentioned several times are important addition to your content, reputation and promotion. No matter the aim to write, articles that are original and well written will add a value.

I will try to help in avoiding five common mistakes that would make an article look like useless. Bette try to avoid doing them…

1- Article Summary’s Being Insignificant

Writing an article summary is probably one of the most important key factors for the article. If a reader go through with a summary to reach the article then you need to be at least same succesful by writing the summary as writing the article, may be even more. Try to take writing the article summary asan invitation to the article and make it attractive. Try not to make it look like an advertisement or promotion but a well explained of facts that is mentioned in the article.

2- Too Much Promotion in the Article

If you are trying to promote a product or trying to do it in a way, don’t make it that obvious even if all the things you think to write is true. Too much promotion smelling facts will probably push the reader away and it might make you article look like an advertisement which nobody is really interested nowadays that much. If the main aim is to promote a product in the article, do it slowly and try to show it’s pros in a conversational way.

3- Spelling and Grammatical Errors

No need to say much here. The article should contain no errors spelling and grammer wise. If so, even the article includes the most valuable informations in it, those errors will make them distrustful. The one will probably say “How to read and trust the article if the writer doesn’t care about writing properly?”. That’s right…

4- Plagiarizing

There is nothing wrong in researching on the internet and influenced by an other article or a writer. You need to be aware of the thin line. You can of course write about the same subject but you should try to avoid using the same words or phrases in an other article. This is not OK ethic wise and also might damage your search engine rankings in a bad way if you do have a duplicated content.

5- Overloaded Resource Box

It is good to have a resource box at the end of the article. That will help the reader to reach to you via e-mail and/or website and will help your online reputation. A resource box with active links might also boost your search engine results in a good way. The thing is you should keep it simple. Just write things about yourself if necessary, the contact ways you want to be reached and may be few more words about your occupation. Never have a resource box that has like 10 lines long. Nobody would probably read it anyway if it’s that long and not relevant.

Points

Have a significant article summary.
Don’t make the article look like an advertisement or promotion.
Proofread your article few times for any grammatical or spelling errors.
Avoid plagiarizing.
Have a decent resource box, don’t make it too long or irrelevant.

The main purpose of an article summary is to kind of convince the visitor to read the main article. From this point of view it is quite important to write an accurate and attractive summary at the same time. Main point you have to focus is to list the reasons in few sentences why one should continue reading the article. Never give out too much details in the summary, just try to explain why they should read the article. Thats what is an article summary is about.

Get right to the Point

Getting right to the point would be a wise move. There is no place for introduction or whatsoever in a summary. Start with the most relevant part’s mentioning and support it with some facts you would be writing detailly in the article. Never try to explain everything, beacause you would be doing it in the article itself.

Keyword Usage

Using your mainly targeted keywords in the article would be another wise move. Spread one or two keywords in the summary without making it show like an advertisement. Cleverly use those keywords and make them look like they need to be used.

Explain the Benefits

As mentioned above, you need to be convincing. You need to tell what would be in the readers hand after reading the article. At this point your conclusion in the main article may help. Pick some words from the conclusion part and try to use them.

Points

Don’t make it look like an article itself. Be brief and accurate and explain why the main article worth to read.
Get to the point. Mention about some benefits, and name what would be in the visitor’s hand after they finish reading the article.
Use some keywords but be careful, they shouldn’t make it look like an advertisement like summary. It would push the visitors out.

Since we are talking about a unique, rich and relevant content is a must to have good search engine results, a well-written article is one of the keys in achieving that. A well written article will definately help to a consistent web traffic to your website.

Wait, no need to step back, you can easily write a unique article, at least an above average one which will lead you to better ones in time. There are few not rules but ways to follow, lets have a look at them.

Outline Planning

Outline part mainly depends on your website’s interest area. Think as a visitor and think what would you want to get from an article. After this, focus on your website’s mission. For example, If you have an online sales website, you may want to write an article to support and detailly describe the products you are selling with or to list some advantages of using those products giving examples from experiences. If you are also planning to make it an article that meets the requirements of search engine standards just try to focus on some keywords you are targeting, and don’t forget to have them in the title aswell.

Picking a Good Title

First, lets underline that you better choose specific and descriptive titles. Won’t hurt if it is catchy, too. Your title is the first thing a visitor will know about the article before reading it. You need to give clues about your article and make it suitable for the main subject at the same time. This part little bit depends on your creativity but after some time you will see you are going to automatically produce article titles in your mind. Especially after you get all the basic search engine optimization ways.

For search engine purposes, you better take the keywords you have in your mind into consideration while deciding the title. List the possible keywords you want to target and use it(them) in the title. Don’t make it look like a meta tag, just spread those keywords intelligently in the title and support those keywords in the body part.

Writing the Content

Well, this part is as important as the title part for sure. Your introduction-body-conclusion content will be the parts where you catch the reader and make him stay and read till the end.

Try to keep it in a conversational way, a lecture way would be quite a bad choice from visitor’s point of view. Try to contact the visitor in a warmer way. Pay attention to grammer while you are at it. Try to stick with the introduction part of the whole content, try to spread the keywords here and there but be careful, you can lose the mood while doing it, just use them in few places, don’t let it spoil the whole article. Besides, it won’t make a visitor comfortable if he/she gets the idea that the article is trying to impose something. This is a thin line and a problem that you have to pay attention to avoid.

After you are done, do a proofreading over and over. Be the first reader of your own article, thats the best way to find out if you did a good job or not.

Points

Make a plan and if you are planning to put it into your website content ; decide a topic that suits your visitors’ interest. That plan should also include your targeted keywords.
Try to be warm with the reader. A lecture way article would probably be the last thing a reader would want while spending time to read.
Do not make the article look like an advertisement while trying to put your keywords in it. Use them like they really had to be used.
Proofread at least couple of times after you are finished.

First of all, please let me put this right; in searchef.com I will be trying to help you out in having a really worthy content for your visitors and help you to make that content as much visible as it can be done. That’s the goal number one. This will lead you to a succesfull result in search engine results, eventually.

Right, you will see some ways in this website to increase your contents visibility for the search engines and thats what SEO is all about actually. What I will suggest here is to “think as a visitor and build for the visitor” way. Search engines’ behaviours are evolving. The algorithm is changing in an eye blink. What hasn’t been changed for both for search engines and website owners is ; a worthy content is what always matters. If you have your content rich, with basic search engine optimizations, you will be fine. What I will be trying here is to help you out not to waste your content and help to make them visible to search engines; make them search engine friendly.

Visitor Point of View

Don’t forget, you can’t climb high without noticing the behaviour of the auidience considering the fact that they are the jugde. You need to know what a visitor want to see in your website, and then you need to find an easy way for them to grab it. Give them what they seek, make it easy to reach. Not so hard.

Search Engines’ Behaviour

Let’s quicky try to think like a search engine now,
- A website that has a rich, relevant content | check
- Same website have reference backlinks in the other related sector websites | check
- Same website has been regularly updated | check
- Same website has not been spamming or whatsoever | check
So, it is roughly this simple to perform well in this competition. Be wise, keep you content worthy, don’t try to mislead visitors or search engines, you will be fine.

Help

So what can you get from searchef.com ? Well, as I mentioned, you will probably learn every tiny details in how to optimize your website. I have to underline again though; what optimization means here is to make your “already” worthy content more visible to search engines. If you dont have a worthy content and still want to rank high in search engine results, there isn’t too much to do here. You might wanna look somewhere else.

Requests

You are always welcome to ask a question. Feel free to drop a line in any page/post or use the contact form to reach. Don’t forget; I am not selling any services here, it is just information sharing, for free. Take this into consideration before you get in touch.

Best Regards
