Having your URL written in relevant websites/blogs comment sections or in forums as user signatures can be an effective way to drive some traffic into your website. That is actually true and I suggest you to do it where possible. What I want to write about in this post is a thin line and if you are not interested in ethics in SEO, you won’t be enjoying to read this post. You ‘ve been warned.

Couple of years ago while working in a project, I was checking and moderating when necessary a website’s comments section which was only one of my responsibilities. It was a pretty high trafficed website and there were dozens of comments coming in daily, not bot based but user comments. That was the first time when I felt so sick about people leaving URL addresses with their so-called comments (I will explain the “so-called” part) just for SEO purposes. I was so stucked moderating comments in that project and I realized I was turned into a master of comment filterer, eventually. I was like “Yea yea, just another comment to drop an URL on the page” just after reading the beginning words of the comment.

Don’t want to go down there too deeply, where I am getting at is; This is a way of trying to fool a person for your needs. Sounds low, doesn’t it? Writing cliche sentences with some quotes from the original post or trying to seem thankful with affectational words is nothing but a disrespect.

In this website I am trying to add information and ways for people who are trying to built a worthy content for their websites, but the main aim here is to do it in a good and ethical way. As for the URL using in your comments and forum signatures/posts; do it in a good way and really mean it while doing. Try to add a value to the topic you are participating. Right, it requires more effort than just dropping a standard comment.

Bottom line is; If you leave a comment under a post with useful information or sincerity in it; that URL you use with your comment will be more attractive to the readers.

Think about it.

RSS feeds have been becoming more useful everyday. One of it’s important usages is to embed some news or posts into your wordpress website. This could be useful if you have more than one wordpress website and/or you may want to display some latest news from a reliable source. To do this you need to provide the rss feed url to your codes.

What we should be doing here is to call the rss.php from the wordpress install in the first line of the code with<?php include_once(ABSPATH . WPINC . ‘/rss.php’); (the rss.php should already be there coming from a default wordpress install)

Then we give the RSS url of the feed we want to display in our wordpress website wp_rss(’http://ENTER-RSS-FEED-URL-HERE’, 10); ?> in the second line. The number written as “10” is the number of the feeds you want to display from the RSS feed url. It is optional and changable.

The final code should be two lines and look like:

<?php include_once(ABSPATH . WPINC . ‘/rss.php’);
wp_rss(’http://ENTER-RSS-FEED-URL-HERE’, 10); ?>

As seen, I added SEO as the business category, website name, and a location information. Emphasis here; This title tag option goes to the ones who give priority to list in local SERPS. Since the searchers add specific details such as state and business category when doing a local based search, listing those fields in your title tags will add your website a higher value from that point of view.

Well, since visitors are the heart beats of the websites, you need to keep that website alive by driving traffic to it. There are several ways to achieve that. Having a worthy content is a must here though, no matter what you do to bring visitors to your website; if you don’t have anything for them those visits will remain just statistics in your analytics pages, they won’t be coming back anytime soon.

Commenting on blogs are a really effective way to bring visitors to your website. Your comment should include your website url with an active link.

Do Really Participate

By commenting, I mean really commenting. Don’t just find a post and leave a comment like “Wow! That’s cool.” and leave your website url with it. That’s uncool and also considered as a spam. You need to participate in the topic and your comment has to add a value to that post. If it does, then the rest of the participators will more than happy to click and visit your website.

Comment on Relevant Blogs

It is better for you to find and comment on relevant blogs to your website’s content. In a related area the readers of that blog are also a potential visitors to your website. With the help of your comment’s being valuable; the readers of that post will find a reason to have a look to your website, probably. That’s what an interested reader would do.

Points

Don’t comment to just leave a comment. Add a value to the post you are commenting.
Never leave a word or two length comment and leave your website url with it. That’s spam.
Comment on relevant blogs.

You probably read usages of “nofollow” and “dofollow” html attributes in link building related websites or articles. We will focus on “nofollow”, may be we can later have a look at “dofollow” aswell. So, what is nofollow ?

Search engine spiders get links from pages and add them to their crawl list to follow. The first and main aim in using nofollow attribute is to prevent spam by instructing the search engine spiders when the attribute is assigned to a link. When it is assigned to a specific hyperlink, the search engine takes it as a link not to follow therefore the given link is treated like a simple text and not taken to the crawl list.

The usage of the attribute for specific links is ;

<a href=”test.html” rel=”nofollow”>test</a>

There is also a way to make this attribute to cover the whole page. By using it as a page-level meta tag, you are saying to search engines that no links in that particular page should be followed. The usage of page-level nofollow attribute is;

<meta name=”robots” content=”nofollow” />

In Which Cases You Should Use NoFollow ?

Well, as mentioned it is mainly used to prevent spam. You may use a page-level meta tag nofollow in your comment section. This will keep your link juice inside aswell. (We will have a look at link juice subject in an article, later).

Potential untrusted content is another good reason to use nofollow attribute. If you somehow had to reference or link to a page that you are not sure about its trust and authority, it is a good idea to give a hyperlink with a nofollow attribute.

Points

nofollow is an HTML attribute.
There are two ways of usage; a page-level meta tag which covers all the links in a page and a single hyperlink assignment which covers only the assigned hyperlink.
You may want to use nofollow attribute in your comments or guestbook sections as a page-level meta tag and on some specific links which you are not sure about their trust and authority.

If so, you should be focusing to some points that will directly effect your potential revenue. Especially the ones which are vital.

The trend is to write product oriented articles to article directories, include relevant affiliate links in it and expect a sale made from that affiliate link from the producers’ website. Well, that is of course possible and profitable when done well but absolutely not a piece of cake.

In search engine optimization, your auidience that will drive you to success includes bots and they have an important role but when it comes to article writing and making sales over them your target audience is only human beings and you have to be convincing and sensible in your article from that point of view.

Avoid Being too much Sales Oriented

If you start to write the product you are planning sale in your head and focus how to make it look attractive, your article will most likely fail. There is a thin line; You have to make that product look like usefull; you shouldn’t name it useful, and writing too much details about the product will definately push away the visitor, anyway. To avoid this try to keep your article in a conversational way, give examples from daily life and even add some small jokes. It will help your article look warm and sincere.

Read and Know about the Product

While warning you not to be too much sales oriented, it won’t make harm for you to know about the product you are pointing out. Learn the cons and pros about it, search and read detailed news and comments made about it. This will help you to use small parts from those in your article.

Mention Cons

Honesty should also be one of your characteristics in the way you are writing the article. As mentioned above, during your research about that particular product you are planning to promote in a way, take notes about its cons and disadvantages especially from the user reviews made in relevant websites and try to at least mention one of them in your article. This will give the reader a message that you are really trying to explain everything about the product even the disadvantages of it. Don’t worry, it may cause you lose a customer or two but will help you to gain a good reputation in the market.

Points

Never forget your target audience is human beings, not bots. Therefore, you have to be reading-friendly in your way of writing.
Your article should not be too much sales oriented. It will definately push the potential customer away.
Even you better not to mention too much about the product in the article, search and know every detail about it. It will help at some points in your way of writing.
Do not afraid of mentioning its cons. It will add honesty and help you raise your reputation in the market.

A resource box could be named the most important part depending the aim of the article. It is commonly placed at the end of the article for the reader to follow the author’s website for related content or reach via contacts for any questions.

Include Your Contact Details

In a proper resoure box, contact details should be given detailly. A brief description about yourself and a website url would make the reader comfortable by knowing where the article came from and where to follow such related content.

Keep it Short

The idea of having a resource box is to give a brief information about the author and the his/her works elsewhere. Keep it that way. Never try to overload the resource box and make it look like a promotion paragraph. It will push away the reader.

Do not Mislead

While giving urls, never try to mislead. You may have few more visitors by an attractive misleading keywords used in the resource box but believe me it will cause losing more visitors then you direct via that resource box at the end.

Article writing as mentioned several times are important addition to your content, reputation and promotion. No matter the aim to write, articles that are original and well written will add a value.

I will try to help in avoiding five common mistakes that would make an article look like useless. Bette try to avoid doing them…

1- Article Summary’s Being Insignificant

Writing an article summary is probably one of the most important key factors for the article. If a reader go through with a summary to reach the article then you need to be at least same succesful by writing the summary as writing the article, may be even more. Try to take writing the article summary asan invitation to the article and make it attractive. Try not to make it look like an advertisement or promotion but a well explained of facts that is mentioned in the article.

2- Too Much Promotion in the Article

If you are trying to promote a product or trying to do it in a way, don’t make it that obvious even if all the things you think to write is true. Too much promotion smelling facts will probably push the reader away and it might make you article look like an advertisement which nobody is really interested nowadays that much. If the main aim is to promote a product in the article, do it slowly and try to show it’s pros in a conversational way.

3- Spelling and Grammatical Errors

No need to say much here. The article should contain no errors spelling and grammer wise. If so, even the article includes the most valuable informations in it, those errors will make them distrustful. The one will probably say “How to read and trust the article if the writer doesn’t care about writing properly?”. That’s right…

4- Plagiarizing

There is nothing wrong in researching on the internet and influenced by an other article or a writer. You need to be aware of the thin line. You can of course write about the same subject but you should try to avoid using the same words or phrases in an other article. This is not OK ethic wise and also might damage your search engine rankings in a bad way if you do have a duplicated content.

5- Overloaded Resource Box

It is good to have a resource box at the end of the article. That will help the reader to reach to you via e-mail and/or website and will help your online reputation. A resource box with active links might also boost your search engine results in a good way. The thing is you should keep it simple. Just write things about yourself if necessary, the contact ways you want to be reached and may be few more words about your occupation. Never have a resource box that has like 10 lines long. Nobody would probably read it anyway if it’s that long and not relevant.

Points

Have a significant article summary.
Don’t make the article look like an advertisement or promotion.
Proofread your article few times for any grammatical or spelling errors.
Avoid plagiarizing.
Have a decent resource box, don’t make it too long or irrelevant.
